Hiring a Drone Pilot in Orlando: 6 Things to Check Before You Book
Drone photos can make a listing stand out or keep a construction owner informed without a site visit. But in Orlando, where controlled airspace and theme-park flight restrictions are everywhere, hiring the wrong pilot can mean a canceled shoot, a fine or worse. Here's what to check before you book.
1. Are they FAA Part 107 certified?
Anyone flying a drone for business in the U.S. needs a Remote Pilot Certificate from the FAA, known as Part 107. Ask to see it. A hobbyist flying your property for pay is breaking federal rules, and that risk can land on you.
2. Do they carry liability insurance?
Drones are reliable, but accidents happen. A professional should carry liability insurance and be willing to name your company or client on a certificate if your project requires it.
3. Can they fly near your site legally?
Much of Orlando sits in controlled airspace around Orlando International (MCO), Orlando Executive and Sanford airports. Flying there requires FAA authorization in advance. Walt Disney World and other theme parks also have permanent no-drone zones. A good pilot checks your address before quoting and handles the paperwork.
4. Do they have a safety record?
Ask how long they've been flying commercially and whether they've had incidents. At Pyramids Drone Services, we've flown for over 9 years with zero incidents or accidents.
5. What exactly will you receive, and when?
Get the deliverables in writing: how many edited photos, video length and resolution, file formats and the delivery date. For construction, ask whether they fly the same angles every visit so progress is easy to compare.
6. Can they show local work?
A portfolio of Central Florida projects tells you they know the area, the light and the airspace. Reviews from local clients help too.
